When life gives you lemons, we found gems! An unplanned campground ended up being dubbed one of the best campsites we have ever stayed at!
We went into this adventure with the mantra ‘expect the unexpected as all of the twists and turns have purpose!’ Our plans slightly changed after our stay at Point Gibbon as we needed to get a windscreen repaired after a previous (before road trip) stone chip turned into a crack with the dramatic temperature changes from leaving Uluru and heading far south into South Australia (let’s face it, we were also climatizing ourselves). This lead us to staying two nights at this absolute gem!
Engine Point Campground in Lincoln National Park! This was when we truly felt like we were on our big lap, with our usual return-to-work days and back-to-school prep being replaced with salty swims in crystal blue water, watching dolphins and seals frolicking just outside our van, and watching sunsets from large granite boulders with glowing orange lichen. This place was never on our radar, so we are beyond grateful that we needed to drop anchor in Port Lincoln for a few days! There are only 7 campsites at this campground and we had cream of the crop on Site 6, Site 5 wasn’t too shabby either! Each campsite has its own fire-pit too. You do need to be self-sufficient and be prepared for an unsealed road on the way in. Any car could drive it but it was a little corrugated in some sections.

Everywhere you visit in this national park is beyond stunning! We visited Donington Beach where we spotted some dolphins in the bay. Not far from here is the Cape Donington Lighthouse with vast views out to sea. September Beach was also quite breathtaking! A wider bay with white sand and the clearest waters. If you can’t snag a campsite at Engine Point, September Beach Campground would be our second pick. We also spotted some emus here!
We stayed here for 2 nights and could have stayed longer, or even campground hopped between here and September Beach. On departure day, we stopped in at Port Lincoln to get our windscreen replaced at Port Lincoln Windscreens which we highly recommend! Since this was going to take a few hours, we visited Eco Wash, a laundromat, to catch up on our washing, Kmart to buy some novels for our warriors and then had lunch at Ming Inn Chinese Restaurant where the food was phenomenal. Once the car was ready to roll, it was time to keep on trekking to Yangie Bay.
