wave rock

wave rock

After catching the most stunning waves at Cape Le Grand National Park, it was time to swap the crystal clear breaks for a wave of a different kind!
It was really hard to leave the turquoise waters of Lucky Bay, but were were excited to head inland again towards Hyden to see another unique rock formation. Katter Kich, also known as Wave Rock, has strong cultural connections to the Noongar people who used this site as a meeting place. Those colours and patterns of the granite cliff were mesmerising, each telling a story from its ancient times. The view from the top was quite spectacular but it was the Ornate Dragon that stole our attention! These tiny lizards ran super fast across the rocks and when they stopped, their front legs and head moved up and down like they were doing pushups! See if you can spot it on the rock…

During our stay at Hyden, we also visited Hippo’s Yawn and Mulka’s Cave which is a rock-art site with over four hundred recorded handprints, mostly of children and adolescents. To our surprise, there is a hidden gem that we hadn’t heard about and that was Lake Magic Salt Pool! The buoyancy is greater than the Dead Sea, plus full of therapeutic properties that made us all sleep like babies. It costs $10 per adult to visit and $5 per child, the cheapest fun you can buy!

Wave Rock Caravan Park is the closest place to stay to Wave Rock. It is a short stroll from your caravan making it super convenient. As part of your booking, you will receive a token that covers your parking if you do wish to drive to Wave Rock or Hippo's Yawn. The caravan park has a children's playground and a swimming pool. Reception is also a kiosk and a place to buy any souvenirs. There is Telstra service but no Optus reception. You can access the caravan park's WIFI though. The closest town for fuel is Hyden.

Two nights was plenty for our time at Wave Rock. If you are short for time, you could do it all with a one night stop, or even a very long day trip of 8hrs return from Perth, Esperance or Bremer Bay, which was our next destination during our lap!

Peace + love,

Wandering wildfolk
