yangie bay
Famous for its emus on the beach and white sands, Yangie Bay had a smorgasbord of activities that kept us busy!
Another day, another national park stay! This time we were at Yangie Bay Campground in Coffin Bay National Park. We did originally have a 4-night booking here, but we had to cut it short and stay at Engine Point while our windscreen was replaced. 2 nights was enough to see and do everything but we were busy. We had Site 16 which was slightly downhill away from the road and needed some clever levelling, but it did have water views. There are toilets, phone reception and communal fire-pits. We saw emus in the morning (and a mob crossing the road in front of us), kangaroos in the afternoon, and we found some pretty cool marine life.
This place is full of adventure! We bush-bashed our way to Black Springs which took us 1.5hr one way as we slowly drove through patches of soft sand and over sharp rocky limestone. It was worth the visit with a stunning beach with calm, crystal clear waters to greet you. We drove over dunes at Gunyah Beach where you can spend hours sand-boarding down the highest dunes we had seen on the trip thus far. We also took in the spectacular landscapes at Almonta Beach and Avoid Bay.
During our stay, the school year had officially begun, and looked different to what we are robotically used to. School shoes were replaced with bare feet, uniforms replaced with boardies, and schoolbags replaced with hydration packs. Our classroom is outdoors in nature, the best kind of learning environment! Our eldest will be completing Year 8 on the road and our youngest completing Year 5.
As we are from New South Wales, our extended leave policy stated that any leave over 50 days (one term), Distance Education must be considered. This doesn't mean that it has to be the only option. As long as the principal deems that the education provided to the children will be adequate, it can be approved. Since one of us is a teacher and will be planning the lessons, we did not need to enrol in Distance Education. |
We acknowledge the Barngarla and Nauo People as the traditional custodians of this Country. Coffin Bay was a 25min drive from the campground. Here you will find a fuel station, post office, supermarket and some cafes. The dump point and water to refill the tanks is at the boat ramp. After our little visit, we were excited to begin to make our way to Perlubie Beach where we had our first ever beach campsite booked!
