bellarine peninsula
And here we were, hours before deciding to cut our Victorian holiday short. But there was just one little surprise that had to happen before that...
COVID case numbers were on the rise in our home state of New South Wales. Lockdown for the state was beginning to look inevitable. Whispers on the radio were saying that Victoria were looking like closing the border altogether to New South Wales. Not knowing what tomorrow will bring, we decided to enjoy our last day on the Bellarine Peninsula.
It was a beautiful drive to Sorrento as you pass many bathing boxes along Mornington Peninsula. We were suppose to of stayed at Mornington Peninsula but we needed to stay an extra night at Phillip Island as I had to await for my COVID test results to come back. What a lovely little town by the bay this place was. Sorrento is a hidden treasure! We checked in at the ferry terminal and then went for a stroll up the street. The town centre is filled with heritage buildings that look over the Port Phillip. We grabbed some baked treats for the massive drive back to the NSW border later that day. There was a sense of nostalgia as we strolled through the town while we waited for the Sorrento - Queenscliff ferry to arrive.

sorrento - queenscliff ferry
We decided to book the Searoad Ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliff. This avoided us driving around Melbourne altogether. It cost us $150 to board our car, caravan and tribe onto the ferry. It was really worth it! Not only did it make for a unique experience for our warriors, but it meant that we avoided tolls, traffic, motorways, and what was deemed a COVID hotspot...Melbourne. The ferry ride to Queenscliff took roughly 40mins. Once you’ve parked your car downstairs, you can head upstairs where you can chill out at the cafe or on the deck. Queenscliff was slowly approaching us and the anticipation for what the surprise was that I had booked was intensifying...
hire a kombi
Ok, this is how was spent our final hours in Victoria before driving back home! We hired a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle from
Hire a Kombi and cruised down the coast to the Great Ocean Road! This was a wedding anniversary surprise for my hubby and our warriors. We have the fondest memories of our own beetle that we use to own and since this year's theme was steel, it made for the best gift idea!
We cruised down the coast, stopping at Bells Beach (where our local Sally Fitzgibbons broke through for her first World Surf League tour win in 2011) and then Aireys Inlet for some fish and chips. We stopped at the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie for some chocolate snacks for the trip back home. We had such a blast! Our warriors couldn’t keep the smile off their face. They particularly thought it was funny to have the engine in the back and the boot in the front! This was definitely a highlight of our trip! Thanks to the lovely Hire a Kombi for sharing your pride and joy with us! Our drive in Greta will be one our warriors will remember their whole lifetime. They also hire out kombis if you wish to do some cruising and then sleep somewhere along the Great Ocean Road.

And so this is where our Victoria holiday has paused until we can head back interstate again and complete the remainder of our trip. It turned out that the universe needed us back at home but it still hadn't dampened our spirits. We are extremely grateful to have had this time away as a tribe. There's one thing that we have learnt from living in this new world with COVID, that it is out of our control so we just need to keep doing what we can to keep safe and healthy. One thing that it hasn't taken away from us, is our ability to keep dreaming up our next travel adventures!
